Predictive Modeling in health care is a process involving assessment and adjustment of risk and behavior, applied to a given population based upon available data for purposes of stratifying that population according to their future probabilities of incurring a given outcome or behavior. The purpose of Predictive Modeling is to risk stratify a population to identify individual opportunities for intervention or action before the projected outcome as occurred.

Predictive Modeling requires an existing data repository, in which data is mined, and selection of a specific modeling tool to apply to the historical timeframe to predict outcomes for an alternative timeframe. Traditional data sources may include individual demographics, pharmacy and medical claims data, lab values, health risk assessment data, and other clinical data.

The Predictive Modeling Web Summit provides a unique means to obtaining current trends, issues and solutions on key predictive modeling topics from leading national experts.

Chris Birkmeyer, COO and Practice Leader, Solucia Inc., Farmington, CT - Chris has extensive experience in health services research, predictive modeling and outcomes analysis. Prior to joining Solucia, he directed the Informatics Department at Health Dialog focused on measurement of disease management performance, predictive modeling, and client reporting. Previously, he managed the Data Center for the Department of Surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and worked as a consultant for the LeapFrog Group. He holds an M.S. in epidemiology/biostatistics from Dartmouth.

Rong Yi, PhD, Senior Scientist, DxCG - A Division of Urix, Boston, MA - Dr. Yi will explain the power of predictive modeling and risk adjustment tools in determining the underlying disease burden and resource needs of the members under managed care in contrast with the unmanaged members, and the under and uninsured members. She will describe how the tools are able to estimate the impact of the managed care program in terms of cost containment, utilization management and quality of care. Rong Yi participates in the ongoing research and development of the Diagnostic Cost Group (DCG) risk adjustment methodologies. Rong brings her strong applied analytical and quantitative skills in economics and finance, to develop DxCG predictive models for the health care financial market. Before joining DxCG in 2001, Rong was a research assistant and a research fellow at Boston University where she participated in a number of research projects on health economics, industrial organization, and economic development. She was also an instructor at the School of Management and the College of Arts and Sciences at Boston University. She received her Ph.D. in Economics and an MA in Political Economy from Boston University, and B.S. in Regional Economics from Peking University, Beijing, China

Brian Day, Ed.D., Director, Advanced Analytics, Highmark, Inc., Pittsburgh, PA - Highmark's Advanced Analytics department has been using predictive modeling
strategies for many years. Their core use began with the implementation of
the DxCG software in our condition management programs. Dr. Day's presentation
will cover some things Highmark has completed using predictive modeling, what is  currently being done, and end with where Highmark is going with predictive modeling.  Dr. Day is currently the Director of Advanced Analytics and has been employed at Highmark for 7 years. His department is responsible for developing innovative strategies in trending disease and costs, developing ROI models, and conducting financial and clinical analysis of both internal and external initiatives sponsored by Highmark. Brian completed his doctorate in Educational Psychology at West Virginia University in January 1999. The dissertation was titled; “Using Stages Of Change To Examine Fear, Threat, Efficacy, And Safety Climate Perceptions In Health Care Workers Who Routinely Handle Needles And Sharps.” The research examined the effect of perceptions on safety behavior. Prior to employment at Highmark, Brian worked at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for 9 years as a statistician and health communications researcher and consultant. Before NIOSH, Brian was a project coordinator at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic and oversaw the operations and evaluation of a multi-year, 400 plus family, longitudinal research study investigating the fire setting behavior among children.
