Presentation: The Hospitalist Movement: The Quiet Revolution in Healthcare
(click above to review the full presentation)

The term hospitalist was defined in 1996 to describe a hospital-based physician that manages inpatient care rather than an office-based primary care physician. A series of academic research studies have documented that hospitalists reduce hospital costs and improve outcomes.

With this as background, a first of its kind survey was conducted to determine the impact of hospitalist programs in a defined healthcare community, the state of Massachusetts. The results were surprising, indicating that hospitalist programs are already part of the mainstream of healthcare delivery in the state. In six years the number of hospitalist programs grew from 4 to 39. Currently, over 40% of medical inpatient days in Massachusetts are being managed by hospitalists.

This presentation will review the results of the survey research and characterize the hospitalist movement in Massachusetts -- past, present, and future.
