In April, health insurance startup Bright Health announced it has secured $80 million in Series A funding led by Bessemer Venture Partners and New Enterprise Associates (NEA), with participation by Flare Capital Partners and others. Bright Health is using the funding to support its nationwide rollout to the individual health insurance marketplace.

Bright Health's objective is to deliver a smarter, more connected healthcare experience. The company starts by developing a single, exclusive partnership in each market with a leading health system, in order to support stronger relationships between consumers and care providers. Bright Health's goal is to offer affordable health plans, a simpler, more integrated technology experience, and provides health systems compelling economic rewards for practicing efficient, high-quality healthcare. The companyís individual health insurance plans will be offered directly to consumers, via broker partners, and through public and private health insurance exchanges.

Bright Health recently announced its first market and care provider partnership with Colorado-based health system Centura Health, with the collaboration bringing a new option to Colorado consumers. Starting for the 2017 plan year, Bright Health intends to offer individual health insurance plans to Colorado residents via its website, broker partners, Connect for Health Colorado and through private health insurance exchanges. Bright is working with Connect for Health Colorado to make sure their platform will be ready for the 2017 open enrollment period, which begins Nov. 1, 2016. Additional market expansion, care provider partnerships and Medicare Advantage Plans are planned for 2018 and beyond.

This special 30+ minute session provides an overview of Bright Health's vision, insights, perspectives, experiences, strategies and initiatives as they face the challenges of a start up health plan setting its sights on national presence in this era of healthcare transformation.

Please join us Tuesday, August 2nd, 2016 at 1:00 PM Eastern as Bright Health's Dr. Tom Valdivia share's Bright Health's innovative approach in the HealthcareWebSummit event: Behind the Scenes at a Health Care Startup - The Bright Health Story.

Dr. Tom Valdivia

Tom Valdivia, MD, MS
Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer
Bright Health

Dr. Valdivia is a health care executive with more than 20 years experience founding, building and selling companies in the health care technology, provider accountable care services, health consumer and health benefits sectors.

As an internist, Dr. Valdivia understands the needs of care delivery organizations having been both a primary care physician and a leader in a large provider organization.

As a medical informaticist, Tom believes that unlocking the value of technology is a function not just of technical prowess, but also how that technology delivers results as it intersects with the needs of providers in the context of complex health delivery organizations.

As an entrepreneur, Tom is passionate about developing, managing and leading dynamic and effective organizations; understanding existing and emerging market and customer needs; and creating services that unlock value in the marketplace. As the founder of Advanced Informatics, the first SaaS based evaluation technology used in hundreds of health care organizations, he was able to build a health care technology company that grew substantially in size and value, eventually producing a 100x return. In the role of Chief Medical Officer for Definity Health, Dr. Valdivia led the development of consumer activation strategies and services that formed the basis of care management for this national, CDH plan. Definity was eventually sold to UnitedHealth Care in 2005 producing a 4+x ROI for its investors. Serving in the role of President for Carol, Tom helped raise over $35M to develop the first direct-to-consumer health services exchange. Carolís Accountable Care Services provided strategic, technical and analytical services to large providers across the country (e.g., Texas Health Resources, Fairview Health Services, Iowa Health System and UMass Memorial). Carol was sold to Optum Insight in October 2011.

Tom graduated with a BA in mathematics and computer science from Carleton College. He received his doctor of medicine (MD) from the University of Minnesota Medical School, where he also completed his internal medicine residency and served as chief resident. Tom earned a master of science in medical informatics from the University of Minnesota.
